CINetig

Working with YOUR pupils, in YOUR environment is much better (than external training). The creative aspect of the curriculum has been missing - we’ll definitely add some back now.
— Teacher on the Cinetig Project with Impelo

Cinetig was developed through both a user design process with Cardiff Metropolitan University - reviewing international best practice - and interviewing Powys teachers to design a programme which would have a positive and lasting impact for Powys children and young people and members of staff at Impelo. This process highlighted a need for more support to teachers in delivering dance through the expressive arts AOLE of The New Curriculum for Wales.

The programme is an in-school teacher training programme that pairs teachers from schools across Powys with a dance practitioner to increase dance/movement activity either in PE, to explore other curriculum areas, or support class wellbeing. Each school has worked with the dancer to create a bespoke approach.

This first phase has seen projects in 18 schools that have completed their 5 day programme, including:

  • 11 English language primary schools

  • 2 Welsh language primary schools

  • 1 special school

  • 4 secondary schools

Working in partnership with Sport Powys, we completed Phase One of this dynamic in-school teacher training project in May 2022.

We know that it is an extremely exciting - if challenging - time for schools in Wales, with radical reforms to the curriculum starting to roll out.

7 schools joined us for the second phase of this project between September 2022 and March 2023.

We have worked with:

  • 6 English language primary schools

  • 1 special school

CINETIG will also be delivered in 2 further schools between March 2023 - July 2023

Some feedback from participating schools so far…

As a result of the CINETIG in-school teacher training programme, I have now devised a ‘Friday Dance into the Weekend’ slot, where we choose a song and just DANCE around the classroom to put ourselves in a positive mindset for the weekend. This is in addition to our 60 minute dance session. The CINETIG in-school teacher training programme has been a valuable experience for us at Radnor Valley. I feel more confident to plan for dance to develop our teaching in the Expressive Arts Area of Learning and Experience.

To support Powys teaching staff further we’ve developed a digital platform available to all teachers in Powys containing dance lesson videos, downloadable resources, lesson plans and movement videos for teachers. To access the platform please email jemma@impelo.org.uk
