Dramaturg Call Out

Impelo is seeking a dramaturg to work with them on their National Lottery Heritage funded project based on the Epynt Mountain Clearance of 1940.

Dramaturg Brief:

We are looking for someone that has an experience with and passion for bringing heritage and the arts to new audiences. You would work alongside Lead Dance Artist Bethan Cooper and the local community, bringing to life the stories of those who once lived on Mynydd Epynt (Powys) or those whose families once did.

Person Specification:

  • Ideally Welsh speaking

  • Background in drama/storytelling

  • Experience in creating engaging performed stories

  • Ideally live in Wales

  • A connection to dance or have worked with dance before and an understanding of creating movement based narratives

  • Experience with/enthusiasm for working on participant-led projects

  • Support the effective evaluation of the project

Fee: £1940 for 10.5 days (to include 6 rehearsal days, 1 performance day, regular meetings with Bethan Cooper and attendance in project related events) between January 2023 - July 2023


About The Role

Role: The Dramaturg will work with the Lead Dance Artist and Project Manager to ensure the cohesion of creative and community voices coming together to explore the heritage and impact of the clearances on Mynydd Epynt, therefore assisting in the creation of a compelling production that will engage audiences

The Contract will be managed by Bethan Cooper, Lead Dance Artist and Impelo.

This project will be delivered in Welsh or bilingually

You will:

  • With the Lead Dance Artist develop the story/ narrative from the research to create community workshops/ production

  • Support a collaborative approach to ‘telling the story’ of Mynydd Epynt reflecting the voices of communities, young people and schools taking part.

  • Work with Lead Dance Artist and other creative professionals to ensure high quality production standards of audience engaged storytelling through dance

  • Creating together with the Lead Dance Artist the content of community workshops which will create a compelling narrative for the production

  • Working with dancers and other creative professionals to storyboard, design and shape the choreography of the performed piece

  • Support the Lead Dance Artist in rehearsals

  • With participants and creatives develop the brief for digital project legacy

  • Take part in artist reflection session

  • Fortnightly or as agreed contract management sessions


About Epynt Project

The project is a co-devised creative response to the impact of the Epynt clearing of 1940 exploring themes of Welsh language, displacement and its intergenerational impact.

There will be a collaborative production process with Welsh speaking communities, young people and professional dancers to develop and perform a dance piece and digital legacy

Project outputs:

  • 12 codesigned sessions with pupils at Ysgol Calon Cymru

  • 4 intergenerational socials/creative conversations with the aim of building trust through eating having fun together and meeting special guests

  • 24 oral histories exploring themes of displacement around transgenerational/ intergenerational trauma

  • Production of new performance-based work on the Epynt with a mixed cast of professional and non professional performers

  • 2 performances

  • Digital assets that are co-designed

  • Teaching resources in line with the New Curriculum for Wales

  • Evaluation

  • Press coverage
