Title ‘What’s Happening @ Impelo’

Autumn Winter Newsletter 2022

Hey everyone, here's an update of what's happening at Impelo, in the Dance Centre and beyond, and what we have in the works!

This term we've decided to focus on what's going on at Impelo through the lens of our wonderful dance practitioners, what they've been up to, and what they have coming up that you might be able to join in on!

Jemma

Image of woman in her early 30s, with long dark blonde hair. She is in a beige t-shirt, hand on hip, smiling. A dark green foliage background.

As you might know, Jemma took on the role as Artistic Director of Impelo in July of this year and so has been very busy settling into her new role. We're very excited to continue to develop what we can offer with Jemma's vision going forward! Jemma is specialising in Early Years Development in the Dance Centre and beyond.

For our regular programme Jemma has been leading some of our Early Years classes, namely Big Fish Baby Fish and Big Fish Little Fish, which both focus on tots and parents/carers moving together and finding the joy in spending active time together in a fun and creative way.

She is working on a number of projects outside of the Dance Centre as well, developing an Early Years programme called Bach, which will incorporate some of the work that we currently undertake, as well as adding some new events and regular sessions across Powys.

Jemma has also been overseeing the creation and distribution of play packs for 0-5 years across Powys to Early Years settings and to home settings where they can be used by organisations and families for movement and development across the county.

Rosa

A woman with brunette hair and an oversized jumper is crouched on the floor in a dance studio on a mat. She has her hands in front of her, with one leg crouched underneath her and the other out to the side. She is looking forwards.

Though not new to Impelo, Rosa is the newest addition to our regular term time programme of classes, with some very exciting sessions for both children and adults.

On Monday evenings Rosa is leading a brand NEW fun and accessible class for adults that mixes all the joy and flow of hip hop with the strength and control of yoga. This Hip Hop Yoga class has been a hit with our participants so far!

After a number of successful one off Break Out sessions over the years, Rosa has also introduced a weekly Break Out class for children aged 7-12 where they can gain confidence in their skills and find their street style. She is also a key part of our Sci-Dance show CELL.

Three children are displayed in break dance poses. They are on a bright red background with spray paint graphics in various bright colours behind them. There is text saying 'Break Out!' to the left of the image with zigzags and starbursts behind

Carolyn

An older woman in a dance studio can be seen from the waist up. She is wearing a black tshirt, black dangly earrings and black framed glasses, her white hair is pulled back into a bun. She is smiling and looking across the room.

Carolyn leads most of our MOJO classes, aimed at adults. She teaches Do Your Thing! a class for 55+ years that focuses on improving overall fitness and strength. She also teaches our adult ballet and tap classes, with beginner and intermediate tap available!

Carolyn will also be leading our Tapathon effort this year for Children in Need! If you want to join in on the Tapathon and get involved in a record breaking event with us on 20th November you can get more information and register at: www.theperformersproject.co.uk

Or if you just want to come and watch or tap your feet to the beat, all are welcome at the Dance Centre on 6th November for the workshop and on 20th November to support.

Clara

Clara runs our regular classes with children and youth from age 5 - 18 years. She leads our Spark and Energise classes for children which encourage movement and dance in fun and creative ways. She also leads the youth class which allows children from 11 - 18 to find their own style of creative movement, exploring different styles, working on technique and choreographing pieces in collaboration with the Youth.

In the new year Clara will be working on developing exciting new youth projects that will help children transitioning to secondary school, as well as working on body confidence.

Clara is also a part of a number of projects outside of our regular classes at the Dance Centre. She is a dancer in CELL. She facilitates curriculum dance sessions at Ysgol y Cribarth each week where they explore school topics through creative movement. She co-leads DUETS sessions teaching contemporary dance to youth participants, in partnership with Ballet Cymru.

Clara is also part of a collective working on developing Glanio, a project that uses multiple art forms to explore the themes of climate awareness and connection to nature.

This term Clara will also be leading a Strictly Come Dancing Inspired MOJO session for adults on 12th November 2 - 4pm!

Amy

A woman in her late 20s or early 30s with short blonde hair and a red patterned headband is smiling at the camera. She wears a beige long sleeved sweater

At the beginning of this calendar year Amy helped us launch our first ever programme of children's ballet classes which have proved to be massively popular amongst our attendees!

This term Amy has also taken over our Little Fish class for 3-4 years on a Tuesday afternoon, giving young children a place to explore movement and dance independently and build their confidence in a playful and encouraging environment!

Amy will also be leading on movement sessions along with Helly for the Bracken Trust.

Two young children, a girl and a boy are crouched on either side of the image, they are both smiling. There is a bright blue background and multicoloured spots and shapes surround them. In the middle of the image is the text 'Little Fish'

Helly

Helly co-leads our regular Me, Myself & Us! class for adults with learning disabilities which offers that chance to get moving and learn fun dance moves and routines.

She leads sessions for Dementia Matters in Powys, helping those who live with dementia in both Brecon and Llandrindod. Helly also works in partnership with Mind to run a monthly session in Knighton, and leads movement sessions for the Bracken Trust along with Amy.

Bethan

A woman in her 20s is in a dance studio. She has dark curly hair with tendrils around her face. She is wearing a black and white striped tshirt. She has one hand held up to her face in a fist, like a microphone. She is smiling and looking to the side

Bethan co-leads Me, Myself and Us! with Helly, running dance and movement sessions for adults with learning disabilities. She also runs Dementia Matters in Powys sessions in Brecon alongside Helly each week.

Bethan co-leads the DUETS sessions with Clara as well, teaching the ballet classes to the youth cohort involved in the project.

Bethan is also involved in a number of other projects across Impelo, including CINETIG and Bach a Iach, which provide resources and training for teachers to be able to deliver movement and dance sessions in school and relate them back to the curriculum work that they are doing in class.

Bethan is one of the dancers in our Sci-Dance show CELL, which after a successful tour this summer, will be returning home to Impelo in November for shows on the 3rd of November.

Lianne

A woman in her 20s in a dance studio is shown from the waist up. She has blonde hair in a long bob with a fringe and clear framed glasses, she is smiling. She is holding one hand in a fist to her face, like a microphone

Lianne is not a regular programme practitioner as she doesn't teach a class of her own, however she is a key practitioner in the Dance Centre!

She has been helping to teach a number of the classes that we have on, and has covered for other practitioners when they are unable to lead their classes. You might also see Lianne attending the Adult Tap sessions, occasionally leading a Monthly MOJO session, or in the office with her (very cute) puppy Paddy!

Thank You!

A HUGE Thank You to all of our practitioners who make the work that we do at Impelo possible!

The effort and passion that they put into their practise is what make our programme run and create such a wonderful environment for fostering movement and dance for all of those who take part in our classes and events!

Diolch yn fawr iawn!
